VOLUNTEER PROFILE
Name: Ryan Fielding
Age: 26
Physical Appearance: link / link
Point in Timeline: Ryan has just returned home with his team mates, just prior to being sent back out again to scout an invading extraplanar army.
World Description: Forgotten Realms campaign setting, primarily the Feywild with some homebrew changes to NPCs and some major events.
History/Background: full background / summary:
◦ Ryan was born in a small town to a family of textile workers. His father disappeared when he was a toddler, under mysterious circumstances. He wouldn't find out until later in life that his father had been found shirking his duties, and as punishment, was made to run menial errands and otherwise kept busy.
◦ During the later years of his life, Ryan met some of his father's former adventuring party. They taught him what they knew, and Ryan set off on his own venture, trying to find his father. This took him all across the continent to different locations, as he chased leads and rumors from one city to the next.
◦ In his mid-20s Ryan fell in love with a man named Asher, and nearly settled down, but instead opted to chase one more lead. When he returned, his lover had already moved on, stating that he couldn't trust Ryan to stick around. Although Ryan accepted this, he grew angry at himself, and became aggressive, relentless in his goal to find his father.
◦ Several months after leaving Asher, Ryan was spirited away to the Feywild, where he was made to "choose" which fey faction to join. Ultimately, Ryan decided to side with the Noc fey, the fey of the night, as their leader Valeera promised she would provide information on his father's whereabouts. He would later find out that his father has been and still was in her employ.
◦ In the grand scheme of adventuring, their first few missions were not noteworthy. Things become more tense when they manage to restart a doomsday clock, and are tasked with stopping it. Shortly after this, Ryan learns of his heritage as a werewolf, and learns to leverage this to his benefit.
◦ Their next few missions lead to fighting a tree-dragon, and stabilizing a time loop in the time-warped forest outside their feywild home. They are also briefly tempted into the service of a being outside of the four major fey factions; Ryan, even more dedicated to finding his father after losing Asher, refuses, despite his party's desires.
◦ After returning from the time-warped forest, they are granted a month's reprieve, during which the doomsday has been halted for a short while, allowing them to rest. They are granted a request on how they will spend their time; Ryan requests only to visit his mother briefly, before returning. He is informed he will need to be escorted, only to later find out that his escort is none other than his own father, Noah.
◦ On the way home, Ryan and Noah do their best to bond, despite the twenty-someodd years lost between them. Ryan's mother is delighted to see Noah, and the three spend the better part of a week bonding as a family. Ryan decides that he's going to try to barter for his father's freedom, and convinces him to stay behind. Back in the feywild, he offers to take over his father's duties; Valeera accepts.
◦ He spends his next few weeks helping around the castle they've called home thus far, offering his assistance wherever he sees it needed. He also spends some quality time with a half-elf he befriended early on in his stay in the feywild. They get to know each other better, and grow to be a little more than friends -- though what that makes them, exactly, is left ambiguous for the time being.
◦ Ryan is sent to retrieve his teammates from the Material Plane. They stay a few days in town where they rendezvous, and partake in a local festival, before the next toll of the doomsday clock calls them back to the feywild. From there, they are sent to inspect (and stop) an invading army from another plane. They find the encampment, claiming they are on a mission of diplomacy, and start working towards a way to take down the portal that's allowing the army to come to the feywild.
Noteworthy Positive Characteristics:
◦ Leadership - Ryan is a natural leader, always ready and willing to take charge in any situation. He is always looking out for the safety of those "below" him and trying to find ways to encourage his teammates both in and out of battle. He has become the defacto decision maker, though lately he's been trying to include his party in the decision-making process.
◦ Compassion - Though he often has trouble showing it in the traditional manner, Ryan is deeply compassionate towards the people he knows, and takes a shining to others easily. Even when he doesn't trust a person, he still feels concerned for their well-being. He does not typically write people off, and would rather support someone and try to help them, than write them off completely.
◦ Adaptive - Ryan's pragmatic approach to most things makes him adaptable to most situations. He doesn't tend to dwell too long and goes with his gut instinct. He is confident in his abilities, and comfortable with letting things work themselves out in the long run. His straightforward mannerisms and self-confidence make it easy for him to ask for help when he needs it. He makes an effort to learn local customs and social norms, and will make a sincere effort to integrate into the societies he passes through. In the past, he has done this with many of the towns he's traveled through, having participated in many different rituals, festivals, and customs.
◦ Determined - When Ryan sets his mind to something, he dedicates himself to it, and makes every effort to put his best foot forward. Even if it's something he doesn't like (such as promising servitude to an archfey who can be described as devious as best) he will still make every effort to see it to successful completion.
Noteworthy Negative Characteristics:
◦ Impulsive - Ryan has difficulty containing his temper under duress, and his confidence can lead to making rash decisions. Combined with his straightforward approach to most things, and it can have disastrous effects. His impulses have turned situations from ones that could be solved relatively peacefully, into ones that escalate to combat and even death. He's also prone to speak before he thinks; while it can be humorous (albeit embarrassing for him) at times, it can also be hurtful, when he doesn't stop to think about whether his wording is as sensitive as he thinks it is.
◦ Stubborn - The downside to Ryan'd dedication to his goals is that it's hard to deter him once he's made up his mind on something; combined with the fact that he's quick to making decisions, it leads to a lot of friction with his party. When offered a way out of the Noc fey's service, despite knowing it's "the whole party or none at all", Ryan makes the decision that he won't take the offer, and digs his heels in when the party tries to talk to him otherwise.
◦ Rage - An unspoken quality of any Barbarian, although Ryan is amicable and generally well-meaning, a well of rage bubbles beneath the surface. Although it often manifests for otherwise altruistic reasons, it can be dangerous both to himself and those he cares about, both physically and mentally. He needs to be careful to keep it in check, and only harness it when needed.
◦ Alpha - Learned partly by instinct stemming from his werewolf heritage, and reinforced by his travels, Ryan has a strong "alpha male" streak. He values a defined pecking order, and more often than not will try to position himself at the top. While order isn't a bad thing in and of itself, it means that he can get aggressive where aggression is unwarrented, especially towards other dominant men. He's also not as cognizant of this behavior as he is his other negative traits, so he does very little to temper this behavior.
Character Fears: The Darkness - not just the dark, in general, but darkness manifested. Being unable to save someone he cares about. Anything untimely/unjust happening to his mother. Losing agency over his own life.
Powers/Abilities: Ryan's abilities are based on a homebrew variant of the Barbarian Path of the Totem warrior.
◦ Rage - Ryan can enter a rage state four times per day, for one minute at a time. His strength increases and he gains additional resistances to attacks against him.
◦ Totem Spirit - When he enters a rage state, the spirit of the wolf can inspire his allies in combat, making their attacks more likely to succeed if they are fighting any creature he is engaged in combat with.
◦ Aspect of the Beast - When entering a rage, he can choose to turn into a half-wolf, half-man creature, losing the use of weapons, but gaining claw and bite attacks. While not raging, he has the ability to turn into a regular wolf, twice per day, and he can stay in that form for three hours at a time. Other than retaining his own intelligence and mind, he is otherwise a normal wolf, incapable of speaking and using anything that requires thumbs. He chooses whether the things he is carrying at the time merge into this form, or fall to the ground.
◦ Beast Sense - By touching a willing beast, for the duration of the spell, he can see through the beast’s eyes and hear what it hears, and continue to do so until choosing to return to his normal senses. While perceiving through the beast’s senses, he gains gain the benefits of any special senses possessed by that creature, such as darkvision, but is blinded and deafened to your his own surroundings.
◦ Speak with Animals - Cast as a ritual, he gains the ability to comprehend and verbally communicate with beasts for the duration. The animal retains its own intelligence, but can typically communicate basic information.
◦ Darkvision - A gift from their fey mistress, Ryan can have perfect darkvision when he chooses. This ability can be used on and off at will. While using it, his sclera turn black.
Personal Item: An ornate but functional dagger, borrowed from his paramour.
